APEX ORIN NX II SSD Boot, Copy and Restore#
Overview#
Because the device’s internal eMMC capacity is limited, an external SSD is required in many applications to expand storage.
To support device replication, SSD deployment also requires methods for subsequent backup and restoration.
SSD-related functions are therefore managed consistently.
SSD Backup and Restore#
Background#
Most modules have eMMC storage, but an SSD may be added when the built-in storage capacity or speed is insufficient. Some modules have no eMMC and boot from SSD by default. The following table summarizes the boot media:

Boot from SSD#
Refer to Booting an Image from SSD The device image version must be 4.5 or later. Earlier versions use a different method because CBoot does not support booting directly from SSD.

SSD Image Backup and Restore Methods#
Products That Boot from SSD by Default#
EVO ONX, EVO ONO and APEX ORIN NX images are currently flashed to SSD by default. Use the MIIVII flashing tool to clone an image directly from the SSD, then flash it together with the corresponding bootloader version.
Other Products Converted from eMMC Boot to SSD Boot#
For devices already converted to SSD boot, back up and restore the SSD contents as described below. Supported products and image versions:
1 All Lite series products; image versions: 4.5 and 4.6 1 APEX XAVIER II / APEX XAVIER II+; image versions: 4.5 and 4.6 1 APEX AD10; image version: 5.0.2 1 EVO XAVIER II; image version: 4.6 1 EVO NX; image versions: 4.5 and 4.6 1 EVO ORIN; image versions: 5.0.2 and 5.1.1
For the products listed above, follow these steps. The relevant scripts are attached.
Back Up the SSD to an External Drive#
ssd_backup.sh Procedure: Back Up the SSD to an External Drive
Prepare an external drive or USB flash drive with free space greater than the used space on the device SSD.
Copy ssd_backup.sh to the external drive and mount the drive on the device.
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media
Run the backup script. On success, it creates ssd_backup.tar on the external drive; this is the required image.
cd /media
chmod +x ssd_backup.sh
./ssd_backup.sh
Run the following commands, then disconnect the external drive.
cd
sudo umount /media
Restore the Backup from the External Drive to the SSD#
Switch the Device to eMMC Boot#
ssd_restore.sh Procedure: Back Up the SSD to an External Drive
Install a new SSD in the device, then start the device.
Copy ssd_restore.sh to the external drive and mount the drive on the device.
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media
Run the restore script.
cd /media
chmod +x ssd_restore.sh
./ssd_restore.sh
Configure SSD Boot
If the device does not boot from SSD, copy the nvme_config.sh file from Booting an Image from SSD section
chmod +x nvme_config.shsudo ./nvme_config.sh
